Rockin' Radar privacy policy
Last updated 30 October 2026
Rockin' Radar is a free app for finding rockabilly gigs, record hops and weekenders, and for
seeing where crowds are gathering. This policy covers the Rockin' Radar app for Android and
iPhone and the server behind it. Questions are welcome at
radar.gigs@gmail.com.
The short version
- There are no accounts, and we never ask for your name.
- Rockin' Radar collects location data to enable Radar Crowds and gigs near you, even
when the app is closed or not in use. You can turn off either one, and the rest of the
app still works.
- Your location is never written to disk on our server. It's held in memory for up to an
hour, then it's gone.
- Nobody can see you on the map. Only groups of 5 or more are ever shown.
- Your favourites and the gigs you're interested in stay on your phone.
- There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking, and we never sell data.
Location
The app only uses your location for the features below.
Radar Crowds. When you join the Radar, a foreground service with a visible
notice checks in about every 15 minutes, including while the app is closed or not in use, so that
crowds can be counted at gigs and elsewhere. This is why the app asks for location "all the time".
Your phone rounds its position to about 100 metres and sends that, with your random install
token, to our server. The server:
- keeps it in memory only, never on disk and never in a log;
- forgets it as soon as you leave the Radar, or 60 minutes after your last check-in;
- uses it only to count people into crowds, shown as bands such as 5+ or 10+ at a fixed point
on a grid, never as an exact number or at anyone's own position.
You see crowds only while you're on the Radar yourself. You can leave at any time from the
Radar button, and you can use the rest of the app without joining.
Gigs near you. This is on unless you turn it off in the Radar settings, and it
needs your permission to use location. At about 9am, including while the app is closed or not in
use, your phone finds its rough position, using a place it already has or a low-power network fix,
and asks our server for today's gigs in an area around you. It works out the distances on the
phone. The area asked for isn't stored or logged.
On the map. "Show where I am", nearest-first lists and the opening map zoom use
your location while you're using the app. The app asks the server for gigs in the area on screen
or around you. That area isn't stored or logged.
Your phone keeps a recent place on the device for these features. It's removed when you
uninstall the app.
What stays on your phone
Your favourite bands and DJs, the gigs you've marked as interested, your settings, language and
units all stay on the phone. Our server is never told which bands you follow or which gigs you
like. Gig alerts are worked out on the phone from a feed that's the same for everyone.
What our server keeps
- An install record: a random ID, a hash of your app's token, your platform and
app version, a device check result (see Google below), and the dates you first and last used
the app. It has no name, email address, device identifier or location.
- Gigs you add: the details you enter are published in the app for everyone,
including any public contact email you give. The listing is linked to your install so you can
edit it.
- A private organiser email, if you give one: only you and the Rockin' Radar
administrator can see it, and it's used only to contact you about that listing.
- Reports: if you report a gig, we keep the reason, any note you add and the
date, linked to your install.
- Address searches: the address text you look up when placing a venue can be
kept for up to 90 days to save repeat lookups. It isn't linked to you.
Your IP address is used in memory to limit abuse, and isn't stored or logged. Our request logs
hold only the type of request, its result and how long it took.
Other services
- OpenStreetMap: map images load straight from OpenStreetMap's servers, so they
see your IP address and the part of the map you're viewing.
- OpenStreetMap Nominatim: address searches and pin lookups for adding a venue
go through our server, so Nominatim sees the search but not you.
- Google: on Android, the app is delivered through Google Play, and when it
first starts it uses Google Play Integrity to check it's a genuine copy. Google handles that
check, and we keep only the result. Google's own privacy policy applies.
- Apple: on iPhone, the app is delivered through Apple's App Store or
TestFlight, and Apple's own privacy policy applies.
- YouTube and websites: a gig with a YouTube link loads its preview picture
from YouTube, which sees your IP address. Opening a video, website, email address or directions
takes you to that app or site, under its own policy.
We don't share your data with anyone else, unless the law requires it.
Why we use your data
Location is used only with your permission, which you can withdraw in your phone's settings or
by leaving the Radar. Gig listings, organiser emails and reports are used to run the listings you
asked for. Install records and rate limits are used to keep the service working and free of
abuse. We don't use your data for automated decisions about you, or for advertising.
How long we keep it
- Radar location: up to 60 minutes, in memory only.
- Address search text: up to 90 days.
- Install records, gig listings and reports: until they're removed by you or by us, or you
ask us to delete them.
Your choices and rights
- Leave the Radar, turn off gigs near you, or remove location permission at any time.
- Uninstalling the app removes everything held on the phone.
- To ask for a copy of your data, a correction or deletion, including a gig or organiser email
you've added, email radar.gigs@gmail.com. Because there
are no accounts, we may ask for details of the listing to find it.
- If you're in the UK or EU, you also have the right to object or complain to your data
protection authority. In the UK, that's the Information Commissioner's Office.
Deleting your Rockin' Radar data
- To remove your location from our server straight away, open Rockin' Radar, tap the Radar
button and leave the Radar.
- To remove what's on your phone, uninstall the app.
- To delete anything else, email
radar.gigs@gmail.com
with the subject "Delete my Rockin' Radar data" and the name, date and venue of any gig you
added.
We then delete the gigs you name, their organiser email and their link to your install, along
with any reports we can match to your request, within 30 days. If you want a gig to stay listed
for the people going to it, we can remove your email and your link to it and keep the public gig
details. Install records hold no name or contact details, so we can only delete one if your request
lets us match it. We may keep what the law requires us to keep.
Keeping data safe
All traffic between the app and our server is encrypted with HTTPS. Install tokens are stored
only as hashes, and our design avoids holding anything that could identify or locate you.
Children
Rockin' Radar is meant for adults and isn't aimed at children. We don't knowingly collect
information from children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
